This week, the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty will be formalized during a ministerial meeting that will take place on Wednesday (24) in Rio de Janeiro. The topic was part of the agenda of the Favelas 20 meeting, which advocates for education about food waste, as well as educational and nutritional public policies within communities.
According to Federal Government data, 8.7 million Brazilians still face food and nutritional insecurity. To address this issue, the Favelas 20 incorporated education about food waste to its agenda, with presentations about initiatives focused on food education and hunger reduction.
Regina Tchelly, from Favela Orgânica-a project dedicated to combating food waste and hunger-explained the food cycle methodology, promoting vegetable gardens in small spaces and composting practices. "We need public policies for schools and daycare centers, so that people can learn, from an early age, how to avoid waste and reuse food in all its forms," she said.
David Hertz, from the Gastromotiva project, highlighted that hunger is closely linked to housing, education, economy, and health. He emphasized that, as part of the G20 debates, "it is our duty to show that fighting hunger goes way beyond simply delivering food; it is about ensuring a nutritional and health right."

Hertz stated that "nowadays we waste eight times more food than would be necessary to end extreme hunger" while Tchelly added that "we can feed people who are starving with the food that is being wasted".
The proposal was presented at a panel on "Social Justice - building bridges with a focus on reducing poverty and hunger" ("Justiça Social - construindo pontes com foco na redução da pobreza e da fome") during the launch of Favelas 20 on July 8 at Morro do Vidigal, Rio de Janeiro.
