FDA denies marketing authorization for Logic's menthol e-cigarettes

American Heart Association

The American Heart Association, the world's leading voluntary organization focused on heart and brain health, issued the following statement in response to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for menthol e-cigarettes manufactured by Logic Technology Development LLC:

"We strongly support the FDA's decision to deny marketing authorization for the Logic menthol e-cigarettes covered by the order issued today. After what the FDA called a full scientific review of the evidence provided in Logic's application, the agency found the company did not provide sufficient evidence to show that its menthol e-cigarettes are appropriate for the protection of public health.

"As the FDA stated, its evaluation of all new tobacco products is based on a public health standard that balances the risks and benefits of a tobacco product to the population as a whole. With data clearly showing that menthol and other flavored e-cigarettes appeal to youth, the FDA concluded that any potential benefits of Logic's products to adult smokers do not outweigh the risks to youth.

"This decision underscores the need for the FDA to also move forward with final rules to remove menthol cigarettes and flavored cigars from the market. These flavored products are also highly appealing to kids and put them on a path toward a lifetime of addiction and put our communities at risk of illness and death."
