This week the Resources Victoria Drill Core Library helped budding geologists get hands-on with the samples from the Stavely Zone in the state's west, which is highly perspective prospective for gold and copper.
During the visit students from Federation University learnt practical skills for aspiring geologists, including how to categorise and log core.
Experts from the Geological Survey of Victoria were also on-hand to share their insights about the extensive collection housed at the Werribee based facility.
The annual visit is an essential part of the university's earth science program, which focusses on Victorian geology.
The program also sees students exploring marine sediments and granites in the Ballarat region dating back about 440 million years, touring volcanic eruption points in Southwestern Victoria and a completing a mapping excursion to Cape Liptrap, near Wilson's Promontory.
The drill core stored at the library contains valuable insights into Victoria's geology and can enhance our understanding of the state's geological history. This information is freely available to help explorers search for minerals throughout the state.
