Federal Drive Update

Federal Drive is now due to open in late July, after it was damaged by a major landslip in the 2022 flood event.

Evan Elford, Byron Shire Council Manager Infrastructure Recovery, said that while it was hoped Federal Drive would be open in June, continual wet weather, has meant the opening date has had to be pushed back again.

"Unfortunately, because of the very wet weather we have had over the past few months, this has resulted in underground springs forming. Because of this, contractors need to do some additional drainage work before they can begin sealing the road," Mr Elford said.

"This will ensure the water underground does not ruin the seal of the road surface.

"Once the drainage work is completed this week, we hope to do the road seal next week. It will then take one week to set, and then line marking, and guardrails will be done. All going well we are hoping to have the road re-open to traffic in late July.

"We thank residents for their continued patience.

"There will need to be a final seal and follow up maintenance done later this year. We are anticipating that this will be done from October, after the road has settled for a few months. This may cause some minor traffic delays," Mr Elford said.

The project has been funded by NSW Government through natural disaster recovery arrangements.
