Feds Urged to Back Cradle Mountain Cableway

Tasmanian Government

In four days, families across the world will be waking up to see what Santa delivered, but the Federal Government is at risk of leaving stockings empty on Christmas morning.

Minister for Business, Industry and Resources, Eric Abetz, said tickets to ride the iconic Cradle Mountain Cableway would be the perfect stocking stuffer, but the Albanese Government need to chip in their fair share.

"We stand true to our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future and will continue to progress the remaining projects to deliver on our vision to make Cradle Mountain a thriving alpine village," Minister Abetz said.

"We know this is a major project for the State and for regional tourism. The Tasmanian Government has already invested more than $22 million to construct the new Gateway Visitor Centre and Dove Lake viewing shelter, which has received overwhelmingly positive feedback.

"Our Government allocated and committed the funds for the State's 50 per cent share of the $60 million originally agreed towards the long term transport solution - a cableway.

"It was always intended that the cableway would be jointly funded by both the State and Australian Governments. Our Government developed a cableway business case built on a comprehensive assessment of the benefits and costs of this solution.

"Collaboration on realising this vision is extremely important.

"Now is the perfect time for the Albanese Government to avoid a Christmas disaster, and follow our lead; step up to fund and deliver for the future of the iconic Cradle Mountain."
