Ferguson avoiding important questions on compensation for East Coast residents

Tasmanian Labor

The Gutwein Government is failing in its duty to provide compensation to East Coast residents affected by the Tasman Highway closure.

Labor Member for Lyons Jen Butler said while the government's support for businesses affected by the road closure near Orford was welcomed, Infrastructure Minister Michael Ferguson was avoiding the important need for others to be compensated for the widespread inconvenience.

"Michael Ferguson was asked a direct question in the State Parliament today on the important need for residents to be compensated and he point blank refused to answer," Ms Butler said.

"Ordinary families and mums and dads have been badly affected by the necessity to make the Tasman Highway safe but they have been left high and dry by this government.

"But Michael Ferguson has no answers.

"I urge Mr Ferguson to listen to those residents who have lost incomes by not being able to get to their jobs and listen to those residents whose lives have been interrupted.

"I urge him to tell them what compensation is available and how they can go about receiving it."
