Fifth Suspect Charged in Ferenc Stemler Murder

Homicide Squad detectives have charged a fifth man over the shooting murder of Ferenc Stemler in 2023.

About 2am on Thursday 27 July 2023, emergency services were called to Broughton Street in Canterbury, after reports of a shooting.

On arrival, officers attached to Burwood Police Area Command found a man with gunshots wounds. He was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics; however, died at the scene.

The man was identified as 28-year-old Ferenc 'David' Stemler.

Local police, with assistance from State Crime Command's Homicide Squad, commenced inquiries before the matter was taken carriage of by Task Force Magnus under Strike Force Murrell.

Four people have been previously charged and remain before the courts.

Following further inquiries, about 9.15am today (Thursday 30 January 2025), strike force detectives arrested a 30-year-old man at Kempsey Police Station.

The man was charged with murder, three counts of possess unauthorised pistol, and acquire etc firearm - subject to prohibition order.

He was refused bail to appear in Kempsey Local Court today.

Police will allege the man was a part of a joint criminal enterprise responsible for the shooting.
