An upgrade to Eltham Lower Park is aimed at revitalising a popular recreational space for the community and activating the area for all user groups.
Following community consultation last year on a concept design, plans have been revised to include:
- Dog park, with snake-proof fencing
- Equestrian area
- Accessible car parking, path connection and seating
- Dog water and waste station
- Seating and shelter in dedicated viewing area
- Restoration of equestrian cross country elements
- Revegetation works
- Respectful restoration of horse yards and signage highlighting the historical significance.
Nillumbik Mayor Ben Ramcharan said Council had received a significant number of submissions on the initial concept plan for the project and it was great to see the level of engagement from all users of the open space.
"I'd like to thank everyone who took the time to provide their feedback. Consultation is all about listening to what the community has to say and this project provided a great platform to hear from all users groups about how we can effectively activate this space for future enjoyment by all," Cr Ramcharan said.
Wingrove Ward Councillor Geoff Paine said the revised plans aimed to meet the needs of all user groups, highlighting the installation of an all-abilities path through the area.
"Eltham Lower Park is very popular with dog owners and this new dog park will provide a safe space for pets to run and play off leash," Cr Paine said.
"At the same time, our horse riding community can continue to use the equestrian facilities, as they have for more than 100 years, this is a win-win for everyone.
The park is being funded as part of a $2 million commitment by the Federal Member for JagaJaga, Kate Thwaites MP, through the Federal Government's Investing in Our Communities Program. The park's sports pavilion is also being upgraded as part of the project.
