Yesterday, Chris Forbes, Deputy Minister of Finance, hosted a second briefing with Canadian industry and labour stakeholders, and provincial and territorial representatives on Canada-U.S. economic issues. Canada's Deputy Ambassador to the United States of America, Arun Alexander, also joined the call.
During this session, officials discussed the latest actions taken by U.S. President Trump, including the memorandum concerning an "America First Trade Policy". Officials addressed questions from participants around the implications of potential tariffs and the government's ongoing preparations to respond to any potential U.S. actions that could hurt Canada. The government underscored that its efforts are focused on avoiding U.S. tariffs, including through assertive advocacy and collaboration with U.S. officials, and that it stands ready to respond immediately to any actions taken by the new U.S. administration.
A follow-up briefing will be held next week.
