Finding Fresh Purpose For Brighton East Community Space

Between 25 July and 25 August 2024, we asked for ideas on what would be the best use for a multi-purpose community space in Brighton East.

The space previously known as the Brighton Angler's Club was also temporarily used by the Hurlingham Preschool and Brighton Playroom.

Community feedback received from this engagement will be used to assist Council in bringing a fresh purpose to the space, and to help create positive and connecting experiences for the local community.

Contributions were made via the Have Your Say ideas wall, alongside email submissions to Council and 3 groups visited the space in person including the U3A Brighton Arts Society and the Southside Dog School. We also presented the project and sought feedback from Bayside's Healthy Ageing Reference Group (BHARG).

Nearly all participants were supportive of the concept to repurpose the Hurlingham Park building to benefit Brighton East residents. They believed that this facility could fill a gap in the area for a multipurpose community space for creative and cultural activities such as arts spaces, learning and wellbeing programs.

What you told us

The vision is to have an inclusive, shared space for the community to come together and connect through a range of activities and programs. Participants who contributed their ideas wanted the space to be used for all ages to enhance wellbeing and reduce isolation.

The most popular suggestion for use by activity included for arts (12%), yoga (7%), community events (5%), educational/study space (5%), music studio (5%), social use (5%), café (5%), community garden (5%) and dog training (5%).

Next steps

Using community feedback, we will further explore options for the site. Over the next few months, the Brighton Arts Society will be using the space while their ongoing space is being renovated.Read the engagement summary on Have Your Say
