Fire Alert: Public Advised to Avoid Pilliga Park Area

Emergency services are urging members of the public to avoid areas in and around the Pilliga National Park – in the state's central north – as a fire continues throughout the area.

About 5pm on Wednesday 26 February 2025, a bush fire ignited near the Sandstone Caves in the national park following a storm.

Rural Fire Service officers have been on scene since Wednesday attempting to extinguish the blaze, with support provided by officers from Orana Mid-Western Police District.

Today (Saturday 1 March 2025), the fire continued towards the Newell Highway near Airlands Trail, with sections of the highway closed as a precaution.

As emergency services continue to attempt to extinguish the blaze, police are urging members of the public to avoid areas in and around the Sandstone Caves in the Pilliga National Park, Dandy, and the Newell Highway near Airlands Trail.

Police have received no reports of injuries during the fire and no homes or buildings have been impacted.
