The Country Fire Authority (CFA) has declared a Fire Danger Period on the Mornington Peninsula from 10 January 2022.
A Fire Danger Period is a time of increased fire danger, but it is not the same thing as a Total Fire Ban. The CFA declares the Fire Danger Period in the lead up to or during the summer season, depending on the amount of rain, grassland curing rate and other local conditions.
The CFA restricts the use of fire in the community during the Fire Danger Period to help prevent fires from starting. You cannot light a fire in the open air unless you have a permit or comply with certain requirements. The Mornington Peninsula Shire's local law on open air burning is superseded at this time.
Activities that have restrictions or conditions during this period include:
• use of barbeques and campfires, wood fires and rotisseries
• use of power tools and machinery including chainsaws, lawn mowers and grass trimmers
• activities such as welding, grinding and soldering
• use of farm machinery
• driving a vehicle in places where the vehicle will be in contact with crops or vegetation.
