Firey crash in Albert Park

Police are investigating after a stolen vehicle crashed into a tree in Albert Park on 2 January.

Investigators have been told the driver of a Holden Astra travelling north along Lakeside Drive was believed to be travelling at excessive speed before losing control and driving through bollards just after 9am.

The hatch-back then crashed into a tree before igniting and bursting into flames.

Passer-by's assisted the man and two woman from the burning vehicle.

The driver, a 19-year-old woman, sustained concussion.

Her 18-year-old female passenger sustained a broken wrist and her 26-year-old male passenger sustained two broken legs.

All three were conveyed to hospital.

Moorabbin Crime Investigation unit detectives believe the Astra along with a white Holden Captiva were stolen from the driveway of a Charman Road, Mentone residence this morning.

The Astra was used in a petrol drive-off at a service station on Nepean Highway about 4.40am.

The Captiva was located abandoned at the intersection of O'Shea and Clyde Roads in Berwick about 7am.

Lakeside Drive was closed in both directions following the incident.
