First 2024 Fast Stream Recruits Welcomed at Base Camp

Hundreds of the brightest and best new recruits to the Civil Service are getting to hear from inspirational leaders from the top tiers of government as part of week-long induction events - called Base Camps.

The new recruits are part of the 2024 Fast Stream cohort - individuals chosen for their leadership and management potential.

More than 900 are attending one of the week-long Base Camp events in September or October with the first Base Camp event taking place last week.

Networks and opportunities

They will hear from a range of speakers and learn about the networks and opportunities available to them while on the programme.

The recruits will also take on a series of tasks to challenge their critical thinking skills and encourage them to come up with innovative solutions to problems - similar to what they could be working on in the future as managers and leaders in the Civil Service.

Fast stream learning journey

Beaulah Chadwick, deputy director, said:

"Base Camp marks the beginning of our new fast streamers' learning journey.

"For some, it will be their first experience of the world of work, and for others, their first experience of the public sector.

"It provides an introduction to the inner workings of the Civil Service and demonstrates how our work supports the government of the day in implementing its policies.

"It's been fantastic to see new fast streamers coming together to learn and build their networks."

Fun and challenge

Katie Gambier, a Human Resources fast streamer, said:

"Before coming to Base Camp, I knew it was going to be a challenging, busy week where I'd meet lots of people. It's been exactly that, and it's been really fun as well.

"I've really enjoyed speaking to many people who already work as fast streamers and hearing their experiences."

Arin Annan, Operational Delivery fast streamer, said:

"I have enjoyed being pushed out of my comfort zone, connecting with colleagues from all over the UK and speaking with the people behind the Fast Stream.

"So far, I've had lots of opportunities to grow, get a better understanding of what the next 3 years on the Fast Stream will look like and get prepared for a career in the Civil Service."
