First Carbon Innovation Grants Program Winners Unveiled

  • Nine recipients awarded funding under Carbon Innovation Grants Program to tackle industrial carbon emissions
  • Part of Cook Government's $1.25 billion Climate Action Fund

The Western Australian Government has announced the first round of grant recipients under the Carbon Innovationspell Grants Program (CIGP).

The program focuses on cutting-edge technologies to remove, reduce or offset emissions from industrial processes.

Nine organisations will share $4.24 million in funding to embark on projects in WA which have demonstrated benefits to heavy industry and mitigation of hard-to-abate emissions.

The nine organisations set to receive funding are:

  • Aurizon Operations Limited
  • CSBP Limited
  • CSIRO
  • Airbridge Pty Ltd
  • First Mode Pty Ltd
  • Australia VRFB ESS Company Pty Ltd
  • Wallis Drilling Pty Ltd
  • Tronox Limited
  • Sea-Quester Offshore Pty Ltd

The grants will be used to support the organisations' technologies to progress to market readiness and commercialisation in line with the WA Climate Policy.

The Department of Water and Environmental Regulation administers the $15 million program through a competitive process.

Approximately $4.3 million of funding will be available in each round until 2025 when Round 3 projects are expected to be awarded.

"Congratulations to these nine organisations who outlined exceptional project proposals for this funding program.

"The Carbon Innovation Grants Program will fund feasibility studies, pilot projects and capital works which will influence the acceleration of Western Australia's transition to net zero emissions by 2050, a target the Cook Government is committed to.

"By supporting industry to explore innovative solutions to decarbonisation, we are aiming to avoid a potential 74 million tonnes of lifetime greenhouse gas emissions from industrial processes."
