The Tasmanian Government is progressing upgrades of the Bellerive Wharf ferry terminal and will submit a development application to Clarence City Council by the end of the month.
Minister for Transport, Eric Abetz, said the new $5 million Bellerive ferry terminal would provide easy access and greater comfort for the 500 commuters who use the Bellerive to Hobart ferry daily.
"Our Bellerive to Hobart ferry service remains popular with commuters, offering an alternative to the Tasman Bridge for pedestrians and cyclists, providing fast and convenient access to the city and eastern shore," said Minister Abetz.
"Since its inception, passengers have taken over 380,000 trips on the service.
"As part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future, we will continue to invest in our public transport services.
"The newly-upgraded terminal will be fully accessible, including indoor waiting areas, improved seating for a larger number of passengers and bicycle storage options.
"The upgrades will deliver substantial improvements in passenger amenity and comfort and make it more accessible.
"The concept designs of the new terminal incorporate community feedback received as part of the draft River Derwent Ferry Service Masterplan.
"Construction on the Bellerive terminal is expected to begin once planning approvals are completed, while consultation and engagement on the three new ferry terminals is about to get underway with our greater Hobart Council partners.
"We remain committed to continued engagement with the public and local councils, aiming to use the Bellerive Wharf concept design as a model for new ferry terminals on the way as part of the Government's planned expansions of the River Derwent ferry network.
"The Tasmanian Government has committed $20 million to deliver new terminals and ferry services at Lindisfarne Bay, followed by Sandy Bay and Wilkinson's Point.
"The outlook of the expanded River Derwent Ferry Service is extremely positive."
It is expected that construction of the upgraded terminal will commence once the six-to-12-month DA process is complete.
