First Method Under Nature Repair Market Released

Dept of Climate Change, Energy, Environment & Water

The first method for the Nature Repair Market has been released.

Under the Replanting native forest and woodland ecosystems method, landholders can register Nature Repair Market projects that:

  • revegetate land on Australia's productive and historically cleared landscapes
  • replant native vegetation to restore ecosystems and support ecological connectivity.

To register your project, visit the Clean Energy Regulator.

How it works

The Nature Repair Market is a voluntary national market. The market is designed to drive investment into activities that protect and repair nature. It is a regulated market and supported by a public register.

Impact

Under the Nature Repair Market, landholders will undertake projects that result in specific measurable biodiversity outcomes. As more methods are developed there will be more opportunities for landholders and for private sector investment in nature repair and restoration.

Opportunities for landholders

The Nature Repair Market enables landholders to attract investment in nature repair and restoration work. They can seek upfront investment to help carry out a project under a Nature Repair Market method.

Landholders may also apply for a biodiversity certificate when their project achieves, or is likely to achieve, a biodiversity benefit as set out in the method. Biodiversity certificates can be retained by the landholder, deposited with the regulator or sold to investors.

Landholders can participate in both the Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCU) scheme and the Nature Repair Market. This method allows landholders to undertake biodiversity projects alongside carbon projects, when they meet method requirements.

Opportunities for investors

The private sector can invest in nature projects through the Nature Repair Market. Investors can partner with landholders at any point in the project life cycle - including to help get a project started or when purchasing a certificate once issued.

Further method development

The department is working with experts and organisations to develop additional Nature Repair Market methods.
