Mr Tibau Stanley Lui has been appointed as the new First Nations member of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority Board (Authority Board).
The Authority Board is responsible for overseeing the functions of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (Reef Authority). The Reef Authority reports to the Minister for the Environment and Water and is responsible for the management of the Marine Park under the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Act 1975, which includes:
- developing plans and policies to allow for a range of ecologically sustainable uses
- encouraging the engagement of users in the management of the Reef
- assisting Australia in meeting its international obligations in relation to the World Heritage Convention.
Mr Lui is a Torres Strait Islander from Erub (Darnley Island) in the Kemer Kemer Miriam (top eastern Torres Strait) with academic qualifications in science and an extensive track record advising on policies for the sustainable use and safeguarding of marine ecosystems of the Great Barrier Reef.
He has over 20 years' experience in environmental and fisheries management, governance, and community-driven collaboration.
Mr Lui was appointed by the Governor-General, as a part-time member of the Authority Board for five years.
