Construction has officially commenced on the new pavilion at Fairfield Showground following the turning of the first sod today.
The $10 million project will see a 1,000-seat grandstand featuring tiered seating, change rooms and amenities, kitchen, bar and canteen facilities, ticket booth and social and VIP viewing areas built at the redeveloped Fairfield Showground.
Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasurer and for COVID Recovery Scott Farlow joined Fairfield City Mayor Frank Carbone to turn the first sod on the pavilion which will be built by Kane Constructions Pty Ltd.
"The redeveloped Fairfield Showground will be one of the leading community sport and recreation facilities in south west Sydney," Mr Farlow said.
"The commencement of construction on the new pavilion is an exciting milestone in a project which will provide the region with a world-class sport and recreation facility."
Acting Minister for Sport Kevin Anderson said the NSW Government was delivering on its promise to improve the quality and quantity of sport infrastructure across NSW.
"Investing in new and existing sport infrastructure is vital to improving people's health and wellbeing," Mr Anderson said.
"The NSW Government is providing $7 million towards the new pavilion project which will enable more people in South West Sydney to enjoy the benefits of sport and active recreation.
"This project is part of a sport infrastructure construction boom across NSW which is boosting employment and stimulating local economies."
Fairfield City Mayor Frank Carbone said the new pavilion will provide a high-quality viewing experience for spectators and facilities for the whole community.
"The transformation of Fairfield Showground will create south west Sydney's best multicultural and sporting events precinct, and enables us to host elite and
grassroots sporting events, major concerts, cultural festivals and family celebrations," Mayor Carbone said.
"The new pavilion will provide more than just extra seating allowing more people to experience these events. It is a community facility that will support spectators, sportspeople and performers with high quality change rooms, food and drink service, meeting areas and more.
"While the Showground is built to the highest standards, it will cater for every level of participation, from grassroots to elite sports.
"Fairfield City Council is committed to creating great spaces right across our City to encourage families and friends to come and be active and celebrate together.
"I thank the NSW Government for supporting our vision for the Showground and our City."
The pavilion will be built next to the existing Parklands grandstand overlooking the newly created elite turf sports field.
The pavilion construction is the next stage of the $28 million Showground redevelopment, which already includes the completed festival arena, covered festival space, FIFA-accredited synthetic all-weather field, international turf sports field and multipurpose amenities building.
