Fitzroy Bridge Project Wins WA Engineering Excellence

The state's most innovative engineers and engineering projects have been named at the 2024 Engineers Australia Excellence Awards – People and Projects WA, held at Optus Stadium last night.

"By honouring these remarkable achievements, the Engineers Australia Excellence Awards spotlight the pivotal role of engineers in improving our daily lives. This recognition elevates their achievements, providing a platform to inspire the next generation of Australian innovators," said Engineers Australia General Manager – WA, Susan Kreemer Pickford.

Local winners will go on to represent their division at the national awards' gala dinner on 21 November at the Brisbane City Hall.

WA Project of the Year The New Fitzroy River Bridge Project - Fitzroy Bridge Alliance, comprising of BMD Constructions, Georgiou, BG&E, and Main Roads Western Australia. The New Fitzroy River Bridge Project is a shining example of engineering excellence. Completed in just 11 months, the project demonstrates innovative solutions, rapid construction, and the effective management of complex challenges. The new bridge has provided a vital connection for the community and serves as a testament to the power of engineering to deliver positive outcomes.

WA Professional Engineer of the Year: Jillian Formentin – Wood

Jillian Formentin is the Head of Engineering APAC West for Wood and has held various leadership roles within Engineers Australia. Her extensive career spans directing large multidisciplinary teams and managing change processes, such as the restructuring of Clough. Ms Formentin has been instrumental in implementing safety regulations and delivering projects on time and within budget. Her leadership and continued hands-on contributions to the engineering profession, particularly in the areas of safety and sustainability, are widely recognised.

WA Emerging Professional Engineer of the Year Linden Blair – Alinta Energy

Linden Blair is a mechanical engineer and Project Development Manager at Alinta Energy, where he has applied his offshore engineering expertise to develop Alinta's offshore wind team. In addition to his engineering contributions, Mr Blair has engaged with communities, stakeholders, and suppliers to develop innovative solutions for the wind industry. His active involvement in the engineering profession, including collaborations with universities and creating STEM learning opportunities, demonstrates his commitment to fostering a future-ready workforce.
