Flash Flood Warning: Anywhere, Anytime

Over the coming days, we may experience monsoonal rain, expected at this time of the year.

Risks of storm bursts associated with the tropical low off our coast significantly increases the chance of flash flooding.

When this occurs, areas could be impacted by isolated flash flooding.

Flooding of this kind happens suddenly and often with little warning.

To protect your family, house and businesses be prepared and ready to act.

Know your risk and if sand bagging is part of your household plan, get and fill sandbags in case you need to block doors and stop water getting inside.

You can get sandbags from the Smithfield and Gordonvale Transfer Stations.

Additionally, SES are also stocked with bags and sand.

If it's flooded, forget it

Motorists are being urged to be vigilant and take extra care on the road with the wet weather expected to continue for several days.

In Queensland, driving into floodwater is the number one cause of flood-related deaths. We're asking everyone to take approach "If it's flooded, forget it".

Even the most experienced drivers and high-set cars can lose control quickly when they enter floodwaters.

Water can destroy your vehicle's motors and the electrics, and it can take as little as 15cm of water for a car to lose traction and be swept away.

Parents and carers are also being urged to educate children about the dangers of playing in drains.

Avoid overflowing stormwater drains which pose significant risks of injury or drowning.

Residents, especially children, playing in or near flood waters can be quickly swept away, be injured by debris or become trapped.

Flood water may also be contaminated by chemicals and sewage. Walking through floodwater can therefore present a risk to your health.

Residents are also reminded that a minor flood warning is in place for the Mulgrave River and there is flood warning for the Russell River.
