Residents in Melbourne's west can now access an on-demand bus service, providing more convenient and accessible public transport options in Melbourne's outer suburbs.
The Andrews Labor Government funded the new FlexiRide Melton South, to ensure locals are better connected to railway stations, shopping centres and schools.
FlexiRide services do not have a fixed route. Passengers will be able to book a seat via the FlexiRide Melton South app or phone, be directed to their closest bus stop - either a physical or appropriate alternative location - and be picked up and transported to dedicated hubs.
Four new buses will service the area, connecting passengers to the key hubs such as Cobblebank Station, Melton Station, Woodgrove Shopping Centre, Melton Bus Interchange and local schools.
The new flexible service will further improve public transport accessibility for locals who are benefitting from recently completed upgrades at Melton Station.
The station now has a second entrance to platform one, a footpath connecting the new entrance to the Exford Road level crossing, extra seats and shelters on platform one, new CCTV cameras and accessible parking spaces.
On top of these improvements, the Labor Government's Car Parks for Commuters program is creating 100 new and upgraded spaces at the station, increasing car parking to 980 spaces and freeing up local streets.
For people wanting to ride their bike to the station instead, a new secure Parkiteer bike cage and 52 new bike hoops will provide another convenient option for commuters.
With construction complete, works will now turn to reinstating the area around the new car park, with the planting of approximately 8,000 new trees, plants, shrubs and grasses.
Other stations in Melbourne's west are also set for a massive car park boost, with more than 1,600 new and upgraded spaces to be delivered at stations in Caroline Springs, Tarneit, Wyndham Vale and Watergardens.
As stated by Minister for Public Transport Ben Carroll
"FlexiRide Melton South is part of our ongoing commitment to deliver reliable and convenient bus services in Melbourne's outer suburbs."
"As well as boosting public transport options we're also proud to be delivering more car parking at one of Melbourne's busiest stations, making it easier for locals to find a space and catch the train."
As stated by Member for Melton Steve McGhie
"We have responded to the needs of the community by giving Melton South locals a flexible public transport option and upgrading Melton Station."
"With significant population growth, it is vital our public transport network is accessible and reliable to connect locals to where they need to go."
