Flood clean-up starts tomorrow

From Wednesday, 2 March, Council will start sending trucks to collect rubbish from the areas of the Byron Shire that have been most impacted by floods.

These areas include Mullumbimby, parts of Ocean Shores, South Golden Beach and New Brighton.

The trucks will start in Mullumbimby tomorrow and make their way around the Shire over the next several days.

What people need to do?

Put all their flood-damaged goods on the kerb, or footpath, for collection. The trucks will make their way around town.

Please do not put general household waste on the kerb to be collected. This service is to help people with the disposal of their flood-damaged goods.

Council understands there are community groups organising rubbish collections in rural areas and we ask that this not happen until next week because the Byron Resource Recovery Centre (BBRC) at Myocum will be full as we move out all the flood-damaged rubbish.

If possible people should call the Resource Recovery hotline on 1300 652 625 to book in a time to bring the rubbish to the tip to avoid queues and delays.

It's going to be very busy at the BBRC so there may be some delays.

People should also check to see if their insurance covers the cost of waste disposal.

Fridges should be emptied of food so they can be recycled and separate from flood waste where possible.

The second-hand shop at the BBRC is closed while we focus on flood rubbish.

Thank to everyone for their patience while we worked this out.
