Emergency services including Queensland Police Service and Queensland Fire and Emergency Services evacuated 12 people from homes at Mossman early this morning, December 14, following a flash flooding event related to ex-Tropical Cyclone Jasper.
At approximately 1am, emergency services identified that the Mossman River had broken its banks and flood waters were rising towards homes along Mossman Street.
Police were called to assist residents who were located on the second story of a Mossman Street home, where eight people including five children and a dog, were safely evacuated on foot by emergency services to Mossman Library.
A further four people were also evacuated to Mossman Library.
A further six self-evacuated, and approximately 40 people sheltered in place.
One home was inundated with approximately one metre of flood water, and multiple vehicles received water damage.
No one was physically injured, and no persons have been reported as missing.
Police are continuing their recovery efforts in the Mossman area, and across Far North Queensland.
Strong winds and heavy rainfall are expected to continue today and into this evening, with further flooding likely.
Residents are encouraged to remain indoors and off the roads for as long as possible while safety assessments are undertaken.
Ex-Tropical Cyclone Jasper is now a tropical low tracking towards the Gulf of Carpentaria.
Residents are asked to keep up to date with warnings at the Bureau of Meteorology, including multiple current flood warnings for rivers in the Far North.
