As a precautionary measure, Kempsey Shire Council will close flood mitigation structures on Thursday 6 March in response to predicted rainfall in the coming days. The decision comes in response to predicted rainfall, ensuring the gates are closed safely under favourable conditions.
Closing the following flood relief and crossover gates will help mitigate potential flooding:
- Belmore River cross over and relief gates.
- Kinchela Creek cross over and relief gates.
- Christmas Creek cross over flood gates.
- Euroka Creek cross over flood gates.
With the Bureau of Meteorology issuing a Moderate to Major Flood Watch for the Macleay River, residents are asked to monitor the situation closely and act accordingly.
Under normal conditions, these gates are left open to allow tidal movement and water aeration. However, they are closed when flooding is expected to help manage the flow of floodwater. While these measures help mitigate the impact of floods, they do not prevent them entirely.
