Kempsey Shire Council, in collaboration with the NSW State Emergency Service (SES), is pleased to announce a series of flood education workshops scheduled for May.
These sessions are designed to educate the community about local flood risks, flood warning systems, and preparedness measures in light of the potential development of another La Niña weather pattern.
Such conditions could bring above-average rainfall and heightened flood risks later this year.
The workshops will feature a special presentation by guest speaker Jack Frost, a retired airline captain and experienced SES Unit Commander.
Mr Frost will share insights from his extensive experience with community action teams in flood-prone areas of the NSW North Coast, highlighting his involvement during the 2022 floods in the Northern Rivers.
He will also discuss the critical role of community preparation in enhancing response and recovery efforts during such crises, as well as their vital role in preparing for, responding to, and recovering from floods and storms.
Their activities include managing community sandbagging stations, disseminating vital information through community networks, conducting severe weather damage assessments, and providing support to residents after major weather events.
The workshops will also review significant flooding events that impacted the Mid-North Coast in March 2021 and July 2022, offering an overview of local flood risks.
