Floodwater Rescue At Tambo

Police and emergency services have rescued a man and his horse from floodwaters at Tambo this morning, April 2.

Shortly before 5.30am, the 31-year-old Blackall resident was travelling from Blackall to Toowoomba to seek surgery for his wounded horse when he encountered flash flooding across the Landsborough Highway 3km west of Tambo.

The driver was unable to see the flooded creek and was immediately swept off the roadway along with his horse float.

The driver climbed on top of the roof of his 4WD until emergency services arrived a short time later.

SES deployed a boat to safely rescue both the man and horse without injury.

Longreach District Disaster Coordinator Inspector Chris Smith said the incident serves as another reminder to be vigilant on roads during severe weather.

"When it is dark, it is often difficult to see that a road could potentially be hazardous," Inspector Smith said.

"No matter how shallow it may look, it's not worth risking your life or the lives of emergency services who rescue you."

"It may seem like an inconvenience, but by taking the time you need to seek alternate routes, it may just save your life."
