As immunisation rates lag and winter approaches, scenes from the Northern Hemisphere serve as a warning locally.
We issued a call this week to Australians to get their flu shots ahead of a potentially devastating flu season.
With a fall in flu vaccination rates compared to last year, and on the back of a horror flu season in the Northern Hemisphere, we have urged the public to not let vaccine complacency or hesitancy - especially based on irrational fears peddled by 'anti-vaxxers' - stop them from protecting themselves, their families, and their communities.
Our calls for vaccination were covered in papers and radio stations across the country, including 2GB and the ABC.
AMA President Dr Danielle McMullen discussed the issue of vaccine misinformation on ABC Radio Melbourne, telling listeners "there's a whole lot of rubbish out there on the internet and social media and even some public figures on the other side of the world talking down the importance of vaccines when we know that they are the greatest invention of modern medicine, and really the best way we can protect thousands of lives across Australia if we keep up to date with our vaccines."
