Focus on active transport

Whether it be cycling, walking, using e-scooters or any other form of active transport, Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) is focused on encouraging people to choose healthier lifestyles throughout the Region.

TRC Infrastructure Committee Portfolio Leader and Regional Active and Public Transport Advisory Committee (RAPTAC) Chair Cr Melissa Taylor said Council was looking at ways it could support forms of active transport throughout the Region.

"In November 2019, Council hosted a Transport and Active Living Forum which was attended by almost 100 people and featured expert speakers from around the world," Cr Taylor said.

"Since then, the RAPTAC Advisory Committee has been busy looking at ways Council could implement some of these ideas within our Region.

"To help us with future planning, our RAPTAC Advisory Committee has developed six key initiatives which were adopted at the Ordinary Meeting of Council on 14 December.

"The six initiatives focus on the development of an Active Transport Policy, walking and cycling improvements to the City Centre, further development to footpath and bikeway infrastructure, mode integration and corridor analysis and the need for budget re-prioritisation in order to meet the requirements of a modern liveable city.

"In the past, to some degree, we planned for walking and cycling separately whereas now we're looking at how we can integrate all of our transport options into one active transport strategy.

"This is an important shift as any decision on future or existing infrastructure should be made looking at how all the elements tie in together.

"It's about providing better experiences for people walking and cycling.

"The RAPTAC members will now work collaboratively to produce a draft policy for officers to take to Council for consideration."
