Community organisations reducing the pressure of putting food on the table could soon receive a welcome boost.
Minister for Community Services, Roger Jaensch, said the Tasmanian Government is again opening the Tasmanian Community Food Relief Grants Program.
The aim of the Grants Program is to support not-for-profit Tasmanian community organisations to increase capacity, and provide food relief directly to local communities.
"The 2025 grants program will provide $500,000 to community organisations, like our neighbourhood houses, to support Tasmanians in need," Minister Jaensch said.
"Eligible organisations can apply for up to $10,000 to provide low or no-cost ready-to-eat meals and food hampers.
"This is an increase on the 2023-24 program, which was able to assist 35 organisations. This year atleast 50 groups will be able to share the funding.
"It's about helping our emergency food relief providers to increase their services."
Recognising the challenges faced by many Tasmanians due to the rising cost of living, the Tasmanian Government committed to increased support for the food relief sector through our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future.
"We are investing around $7 million to support emergency food relief programs across the State while also looking to food resilience in the future," Minister Jaensch said.
"As we move from food relief to food resilience in Tasmania, we will continue to work towards clear pathways for people to access quality, affordable and sustainable food options.
"Tasmanian food relief organisations can now apply for grants, and I thank these organisations for the service they provide in their community."
To be eligible, applicants must be not-for-profit community organisations that provide direct food relief to members of their local community.
Applications open from 2pm today and close on February 28.
