More than $3,700 in donations collected during Council's two most recent free green waste disposal periods will support foster carers in the Far North.
Cairns Mayor Bob Manning today presented $3,704.70 in donations to IFYS Foster Care.
"We are very pleased to be able to make this donation on behalf of residents to this very important service," Cr Manning said.
"IFYS has been providing foster care support to children and families for over three decades.
"This organisation supports children and young people, along with their families, during periods of family crisis by providing a caring and nurturing environment.
"The service allows children to continue with schooling and other activities so that their remains a sense of normality and they can maintain important friendships, which are an important part of a person's life.
Sally-Ann Eakin, IFYS Operations Manager, said the donation would assist foster carers in providing for children in their care.
"The donations to IFYS Foster Care from Council's Green Waste initiative will go a long way to supporting our foster carers with money for day to day items such as educational resources, food, clothing and extracurricular activities for children and young people in care that aren't supported by state funds," she said.
Voluntary donations were collected at the gate of each of Cairns Regional Council's waste transfer stations during the free green waste drop-off from 21-29 August and 20-28 November.
Smithfield transfer station topped the donation tally with $1505.60 dropped into the tin over the two periods. Babinda produced the highest rate of donations per person with an average of $0.73 donated per vehicle.
