In an effort to reduce fox numbers in Stony Creek Reserve in Kinglake, Council, in collaboration with the King Parrot Catchment Fox Control Group, will be conducting a fox trapping trial using soft-jawed leg hold traps.
The trial will be carried out over a number of weeks, from 15 - 28 August 2022 and will operate under the requirements of Animal Welfare Victoria, Agriculture Victoria and Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions.
Leghold traps are smooth jawed, spring-operated traps designed to capture an animal by the foot or leg. This trail will be conducted by contractors who are qualified and experienced in invasive animal control and the traps will be checked at least once every 24 hours.
To keep your pets safe, please do not allow them to roam within the Reserve during the trial period. Pet owners must not allow their animals to roam outside of their property.
The Red Fox (Vulpes vulpes) is an introduced species that preys on both native animals and livestock and poses a significant risk to the environment and agriculture. In Victoria, red foxes are an established pest animal under the Catchment and Land Protection Act 1994 (the Act). Under this Act, Council is responsible for preventing the spread of established pest species on Council-managed land and reserves.
