Tens of thousands of Territorians from tomorrow can access a free driver's licence for one year.
The free licence applies to more than 112,000 Territorians who are paid and licensed in the Northern Territory, with the benefit forming the CLP's final cost of living initiative to rollout through the Motor Vehicle Registry (MVR).
Treasurer and Minister for Logistics and Infrastructure, Bill Yan, said the free one-year licence was testament to the CLP Government delivering on its election commitments to ease the cost of living.
"Territorians gave us a mandate to reduce crime, rebuild the economy and restore our iconic Territory lifestyle," said Mr Yan.
"Key to restoring our iconic lifestyle is easing the cost of living. The free licence for 12 months provides real relief for Territorians who told us they wanted reduced cost of living, and that's what we're delivering.
"As we welcome in the new year, the free licence brings together our other MVR cost of living initiatives, including a freeze on registration fees and a new 3-year trailer registration option, saving Territorians' time and money so they can enjoy our unique lifestyle."
The free licence is available until 30 June 2025. Territorians due to renew their licence on or before 30 June 2025 will receive a renewal notice with the cost of each renewal period reflecting the 12-month free period, which will now include:
- 1 year - no fee (previously $38)
- 2 years - $28 (previously $58)
- 5 years - $92 (previously $115)
- 10 years - $178 (previously $198).
For those Territorians who are not due to renew their licence before 30 June 2025, simply apply either in person at an MVR or online using MVR Quickpay for the reissue of your existing licence with a 12-month extension to the expiry date.
If your licence requires a new photo, customers will need to visit an MVR. For details on the initiatives, or how to access them, visit mvr.nt.gov.au
