Free Events Mark Disability Day

Cool off and celebrate International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) in Parramatta as Council offers free pool entry at Parramatta Aquatic Centre to people with a disability and their carers.

It's one of many accessible events the City of Parramatta is running in support of the global celebration of International Day of People with Disability on 4 December.

Other free events including Auslan Story Time, COVID-Safe Crafternoon, and a Robotics Workshop will be held across Parramatta Library and Parramatta Artists Studios with Riverside Theatres running two ticketed accessible shows - Once Upon a Quest and The Greatest Showman.

City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Martin Zaiter said the City is committed to building a more inclusive future for all.

"We want Parramatta to be an inclusive and accessible city where people of all abilities can thrive," Cr Zaiter said.

"Our City and our world-class facilities have so much to offer everyone and these tailored events are designed to create activities, experiences and spaces that spark joy and creativity for people with disabilities."

The Australian Academy of Robotics and STEM (AARAS) Education, which works to empower individuals of all abilities explore the world of robotics, coding and more, said it's thrilled to be bringing its program to Parramatta for the first time.

"We are proud to participate in the International Day of People with Disability expo at Parramatta Library, providing young people with disabilities the chance to experience hands-on STEM learning," said operations manager Saranya Kandasamy.

"Through our accessible robotics workshop, we are committed to inspiring all students to discover their strengths, think creatively and envision a future shaped by their unique talents."

The global celebration also marks Year 3 of the City's Disability Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP) 2022-2026, which aims to break down barriers and promote awareness in all areas of community life.

"This day allows us to reflect on the progress made with our Disability Inclusion Action Plan and push ahead with the next phase of deliverables." Cr Zaiter said.

A visual reminder of the importance of the day will be seen on Parramatta's community, cultural and civic hub PHIVE, which will be lit up purple on IDPwD this year.

Parramatta Aquatic Centre is also currently running a pilot learn to swim program for preschoolers with disability aged 3-6 years from multicultural backgrounds.
