More than $2,600 in donations collected during Council's free green waste disposal periods in August and November 2024 have been presented to the Cairns City Kennel Club.
Residents taking advantage of Council's free green waste disposal were encouraged to make a voluntary gold coin donation to support the organisation.
Cairns Mayor Amy Eden yesterday presented a cheque for $2,677.30 to the organisation.
Established in 1952, the club has grown to be the largest all breeds and obedience kennel club in Queensland.
"This club provides an importance service to the community through dog education and training classes," Cr Eden said.
"With more than 25,000 dogs registered in Cairns, dogs are certainly a much valued and important part of our community."
Cairns City Kennel Club vice-president Wayne Smith said at the organisation's mission was to promote responsible dog ownership.
"We run dog obedience training classes under the guidance of an experience team who focus on positive reinforcement training techniques," he said.
"Dog owners are taught how to use praise and treat to reward their dog to promote desired behaviours.
"We thank Council and the community for this generous donation, which will help us maintenance and refurbish our facilities."
Voluntary donations, from 10,834 vehicles, were collected at the gate of each of Cairns Regional Council's waste transfer stations during the free green waste drop-off periods.
A total of $1733.80 was raised from the August free green waste disposal period from 5006 visits, with Portsmith Transfer Station topping the donation tally with $896.95.
In November, $943.50 was donated from 5828 vehicle visits, with Smithfield Transfer Station topping the tally with $422.40.
