Lovers of live music, nostalgia, film and free cake are invited to a very special celebration in honour of two historic Sunshine Coast venues.
Sunshine Coast Council is hosting a street festival to commemorate the centenary of Landsborough Museum and the Landsborough School of Arts. It will be held on Saturday, May 18, from 10am to 2pm.
Sunshine Coast Division 1 Councillor Jenny Broderick said the community was in for a treat with a range of hands-on activities, face-painting, live music, entertainment and birthday cake.
"Our unique Sunshine Coast heritage should be celebrated and what better way than a street festival to engage all ages and cultures," Cr Broderick said.
"The celebration continues inside the museum with the new Grassroots to Glory film and exhibition, which showcases the region's rich aquatic sporting heritage.
"Previously unseen footage, stills and artefacts, are waiting to be discovered and the two lovingly restored water ski boats that feature in the film, including 'Cindy' , will be on display, for one day only."
Entry to the Street Festival and Landsborough Museum, including the 'Grassroots to Glory' exhibition, is free.
Cr Broderick said both historic venues, Landsborough Museum and the Landsborough School of Arts, were joining forces to celebrate the momentous anniversary in the Landsborough heritage precinct.
"Many people don't know that from 1912 to 1968, Landsborough was the governmental capital of Landsborough Shire and a bustling hub of industry and art," she said.
"Our historic 1924 Landsborough Shire Council Chambers is a state heritage-listed building.
"The Landsborough School of Arts was constructed in 1924, just 12 years after the shire was gazetted, showcasing the importance of art and culture to a thriving town and community.
"The decline in primary industry between the 1930s and 1950s and the switch from rail to road opened up more areas for discovery, however the heritage value of this hinterland town will always remain."
Stories, images, resources, including details of the Landsborough Museum collection, can all be found on Council's heritage website.
The Landsborough Museum collection houses more than 14,000 objects as well as images, periodicals and publications.
The event is supported by the Arts and Heritage Levy paid by all property owners.
A century of memories
1912: In February, 423 acres were annexed from Caboolture Shire and proclaimed Landsborough Shire. The first Council meeting for the newly formed Shire was held on 20 April.
1913: A Council residence and one room office was constructed and used for meetings of the Council.
1924: The first purpose-built Council Chambers opened.
1968: Local government administration was relocated to Caloundra.
1974: The former Landsborough Shire Council Chambers closed.
1975: The Landsborough Historical Society secured a lease over the building and the building was opened as the Landsborough Shire Historical Museum.
1987: The Shire of Landsborough was granted city status and renamed the City of Caloundra.
