Fremantle Candidates Go Head-to-head In Debate

Candidates for the Federal seat of Fremantle have made their election pitches to voters during a lively debate hosted by the University of Notre Dame Australia.

Six of the seven candidates went head-to-head last night in a packed Tannock Hall as part of the traditional Federal Election Debate for Fremantle.

Voters, local leaders, business people and members of the University community heard from Independent Kate Hulett, Australian Citizens Party candidate John Bird, sitting Labor MP Josh Wilson, Greens candidate Amy Warne, local Liberal Tait Marston and Socialist Alliance candidate Josh Last.

After introductions, the candidates fielded questions from the audience on a diverse range of issues, including housing, the cost of living, AUKUS, government debt, healthcare and industrial relations law.

The crowd pressed the candidates on how they would represent the wishes of their local community if they were elected after Australians head to the polls on May 3.

Notre Dame's Executive Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Sciences, Law and Business, Martin Drum, said that the turnout was excellent and the perspectives offered by the candidates were diverse.

"The debate was lively, engaging and energetic," he said. "It was great to see so many different issues discussed, from local issues like Fremantle Hospital through to global issues like the Australia-US relationship."

The Federal election debate was hosted by Notre Dame in partnership with Fremantle Network, Oxfam Fremantle and the Fremantle Society. It was moderated by Fremantle Herald Editor and Notre Dame Sessional Tutor Steve Grant.
