Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) is calling for submissions on its assessment of standards for infant formula products.
FSANZ has reviewed infant formula standards in the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code (the Code) through Proposal P1028 - Infant formula.
The review assessed the current regulatory framework incorporating standards for safety, food technology, nutrient composition, labelling and product representation.
FSANZ CEO Dr Sandra Cuthbert said the review covers infant formula (for use from newborn), follow-on formula (for use from six to 12 months of age) and infant formula for special dietary use.
"Our review aims to ensure regulation of infant formula products is clear, reflects the latest scientific evidence and aligns with international standards," Dr Cuthbert said.
"Although breastfeeding is the recommended way to feed a baby, a safe and nutritious substitute for breastmilk is needed for babies who are not breastfed.
"Infant formula must be safe for infants to consume, and caregivers need to know how to prepare, use and store the product safely."
The call for submissions includes a summary of FSANZ's consideration of stakeholder submissions, assessment of regulatory decisions and the proposed draft variation which extends across four Standards and five Schedules in the Code.
It is the second of two legislated calls for submissions and is the final opportunity for public comment on the proposal.
Submissions close at 6pm (Canberra time) 7 July 2023.
