Safety is being bolstered on an important detour that has carried significantly more traffic than normal since Cyclone Debbie destroyed parts of Marlborough-Sarina Road.
The Palaszczuk Government has invested $1.2 million to seal a 500 metre section of Koumala-Bolingbroke Road following its heavy use while repairs on Marlborough-Sarina Road are underway.
Transport and Main Roads Minister said traffic on Koumala-Bolingbroke Road increased by up to 443 per cent since Cyclone Debbie 18 months ago.
"Enhancing safety on Koumala-Bolingbroke Road has been a priority for us since Cyclone Debbie caused several landslips on Marlborough–Sarina Road," Mr Bailey said.
"In addition to the existing funding, an extra $1.2m was injected into the road to pave and seal the 500-metre gap on the approach to the Koumala Range.
"Since the closure of Marlborough–Sarina Road, an increasing number of motorists have been using Koumala–Bolingbroke Road, with traffic surging compared to normal use."
Mr Bailey said a traffic and road safety assessment had been undertaken, with road enhancements based on its recommendations.
"We’ve been working hard to implement many proposed safety upgrades, including sealing sections of Koumala–Bolingbroke Road and the Koumala Range," he said.
"Recommendations also included the addition of extra signs, and installation of guardrail to address road conditions, plus ongoing maintenance and grading.
"Once the extra upgrade works are completed, Koumala-Bolingbroke Road will be continuously sealed from the Bruce Highway intersection at Koumala to the bottom of the Koumala Range on the western side.
"We are committed to ensuring the detour route is as safe as possible, and the maintenance standard and service frequency on remaining sections of Koumala–Bolingbroke Road have increased.
"Safety is our number one priority. Motorists are reminded of the changed traffic conditions, including reduced speed limits and lane closures.
"These conditions are essential for the safety of both roadworkers and motorists."
While upgrade works on Koumala–Bolingbroke Road are ongoing, restoration works continue along Marlborough-Sarina Road.
