- Three acts share in $130,237 funding to progress musical opportunities
- Contemporary Music Fund $15k-plus round provides grants of $15,000 to $60,000
- One-off projects or programs of activities are eligible
Three exciting Western Australian music acts will have greater opportunities to shine in 2023, sharing in more than $130,000 of State Government funding.
The Contemporary Music Fund (CMF) 15k-plus program provides grants to eligible homegrown contemporary music artists with projects that enable them to produce and promote their work, building links in Australia and the world.
Ravensthorpe Regional Arts Council will receive $52,353 for the Rave About Arts music program, taking place in remote towns in the Esperance region. The 12-month program will be delivered in conjunction with regional presenter Kyza Presents and will include live music and professional development workshops.
Fremantle-based hip hop artist Mali Bouquey De Araujo, performing as Mali Jo$e, will receive $25,100 to enable him to produce, record, release and promote a run of three singles and his sophomore EP in 2023.
First Nations band The Desert Stars will receive $52,784 to enable the musicians to perform in five cinema style events to support their documentary 'Gravel Road' in Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide and Broome from March to December 2023.
The CMF's objective is to capitalise on available opportunities for the contemporary music sector and contribute to the development of markets for WA music across the globe.
It also ensures a strong representation of musicians from Aboriginal, regional, cultural and gender diverse backgrounds, as well as contributing to the recovery of the WA contemporary music sector following the effects of COVID-19.
For the purpose of the CMF, contemporary music is defined as music that is currently being written and recorded and/or performed, with priority given to music that is broadly understood as popular.
Since July 2021 the CMF grants program has provided $450,000 to a variety of projects and programs.
It is administered by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries
As stated by Culture and the Arts Minister David Templeman:
"The Contemporary Music Fund continues to provide a fantastic boost to WA's thriving music scene.
"It's particularly great that this round of recipients hail from diverse backgrounds, including regional Western Australia.
"This funding program is again supporting our homegrown music scene, allowing it to thrive and grow."
