The funding, provided under Round 4 of the Regional Airports Program, will complement $5.7 million of Council investment to deliver a full runway overlay to reinforce the surface and enable larger aircraft to land.
This will support both the visitor economy and emergency services, particularly during bushfire season, and ensure this critical regional transport infrastructure remains fit for purpose.
Albury Mayor, Kevin Mack, said Council was excited by the news and is currently awaiting the detailed funding deeds to come through.
"In the meantime, we're progressing our planning for the project, which we anticipate will take approximately two years to complete," he said.
"This announcement is great news not only for Albury Airport, boosting its capacity to receive larger aircraft, but also for regional aviation generally."
