The Albanese Government will provide up to $25 million towards major restoration works at the Greek Orthodox Archdiocesan site at Cleveland Street, Redfern.
This investment will benefit and serve the whole community by:
- Helping restore the historical Cathedral of the Annunciation of Our Lady;
- Upgrading the St Andrew's Theological College;
- And helping to build a new Great Hall, Library and Museum.
Australia is home to a significant Greek Orthodox community, with a population of over 400,000 people across the nation.
This year marks 100 years since the establishment of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia, and there are now more than 120 parishes across the country.
The reconstruction and upgrades to these facilities will ensure there is a space for the Greek Orthodox community to practice and celebrate their faith for generations to come.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will today welcome His All-Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew. This is only the second time His All Holiness has visited Australia.
His All-Holiness will spend two weeks in Australia, meeting with Greek Australian and diaspora communities, Orthodox parishioners, political and interfaith leaders, and community groups.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said one of Australia's greatest assets is our diversity.
"The Greek Australian community is a vibrant part of Australia's identity, involved in business, public service, politics, the arts and sport.
"I am pleased the Australian Government can contribute funding to such an important community project."
