A spontaneous decision at a newsagency led a Sydney man to a stunning $1 million windfall in the Saturday Lotto draw on July 27, 2024.
The Crows Nest local, who typically plays Powerball, decided to try his luck in the Saturday Lotto after observing the customer ahead of him in line and ended up bagging $952,380.96.
He held one of the 21 division one winning entries nationally in Saturday Lotto draw 4489 on Saturday 27 July 2024.
The man’s entry was unregistered meaning lotto officials had no way of contacting him with the winning news and had to wait for him to check his ticket and come forward.
“I’m really good!” the gleeful winner laughed when speaking to a lotto official.
“The best way to explain it is that it just doesn’t feel real.
“I normally play Powerball and I’d never been to that newsagency, but I was close by waiting for something when I thought I’d just pop in.
“I saw the Superdraw was on and I was looking at how to play Saturday Lotto.
“Then the guy in front of me purchased a ticket for it and I said, ‘I’ll get the same!’.
“It’s funny to think of all the small moments that led to the win. If he wasn’t in front of me, things might’ve been different!
“So far, I’ve only told my wife. We’re stoked.
“We’ve been wanting to do some work on the house so it’s going to come in really handy.
“Then we have some other things on the list but to sum it up, it’s going to help more than you know!”
The winning entry was purchased from Crows Nest News & Gifts, 25 Willoughby Road, Crows Nest.
Crows Nest News & Gifts owner Louise Geng said she and the team were ecstatic for their customer.
“It’s very exciting! This will be our third division one win in five years,” she said.
“Looks like we’re on a winning streak!
“Our customers are super excited too. Everyone has been coming in hoping that their ticket is the winning one.
“It’s great that the winner has finally come forward. We’re so happy for them and wish them all the best with their prize.”
The winning numbers in Saturday Lotto draw 4489 on 27 July 2024 were 4, 37, 45, 27, 11 and 20, while the supplementary numbers were 15 and 10.
Across Australia, there were 21 division one winning entries in Saturday Lotto draw 4489 – eight in Victoria, five in New South Wales, four in Queensland and two each in South Australia and Western Australia.
