Townsville City Council has closed campgrounds as another measure to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).
Mayor and Townsville Local Disaster Management Group (TLDMG) Chair Jenny Hill said the decision followed the direction given by the State Government yesterday.
"The State Government announced yesterday that campgrounds would be closed across Queensland and Council has moved quickly to make sure we comply with that direction," Cr Hill said.
"We know that it is coming up to Easter and the school holidays, but that is why it is even more important that we practice the social distancing as enforced by the Federal and State Governments.
"Every resident has a role to play in minimising the spread of COVID-19 within our community and this is the right decision to keep everyone safe."
Staff who manage the campgrounds will continue to work maintaining the areas, completing their usual tasks and ensuring that the closure is enforced.
Campground and day use areas affected include:
- Lake Paluma
- Saunders Beach
- Bluewater Park
- Toomulla
- Rollingstone
- Balgal Beach
