The European University Alliance for Global Health (EUGLOH) celebrates its first anniversary.
The EUGLOH Alliance is a research collaboration, which focuses on one of the central challenges that we now face: How can the increasing global need for effective healthcare services be met? This had become an urgent issue long before the advent of the current COVID-19 pandemic, which however has further underlined its importance. The future shape of healthcare in an age of globalization is bound up with other questions, such as the impact of digitalization on health monitoring and services, the future course of climate change and efforts to mitigate it, together with various other environmental risks and increasing threats to biodiversity. The central goal of efforts to achieve truly global health must be to enhance the delivery of health services by eliminating inequalities in their provision and accessibility.
The EUGLOH Alliance is made up of five European universities – LMU, Paris-Saclay (France), Lund (Sweden), Porto (Portugal) and Szeged (Hungary). In addition to interdisciplinary research projects, the specialists and students involved in the collaboration place great emphasis on new approaches to the study of the health sciences – with the aim of educating a new generation of students who will help to find solutions to global health problems. EUGLOH is one of 17 pilot university alliances established by the European Union, with each network receiving up to 5 million euros during the initial 3-year funding period.
EUGLOH has now completed the first year of the pilot phase. On the occasion of its first Alliance Day, the network is presenting its central fields of activity, as well as providing informal introductions to the participating universities. The event is primarily intended for students at all stages of their university education – from Bachelor's students to doctoral candidates. But other university staff and members of the public will also find much to interest them. Owing to the pandemic, this first Alliance Day is a purely digital event. It has been organized as a virtual fair, in which the participating universities highlight various aspects of their research and study programs in the field of global health. Videos, round-table discussions and interactive quiz games complement live lectures in which researchers report on their projects and findings.
