Future Strategies Unveiled for Two Northern Highways

Tasmanian Government

We're focused on building an exciting future for Tasmania for generations to come as part of the 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future.

The Tasmanian Liberal Government has released comprehensive strategies to guide investment on the East and West Tamar Highways.

Minister for Infrastructure, Kerry Vincent, said both highways were important connectors for growing communities, industry, agriculture and visitors to Launceston and other parts of the State.

"These new strategies provide evidence-based, prioritised lists of projects for future funding, complementing each other to provide a long-term view for transport infrastructure in the State's North," he said.

"Community consultation was vital in the development of these strategies, ensuring future investment on these key routes meets the needs and expectations of those who travel on them every day. I thank the public for their feedback."

A combined $203 million in Australian and Tasmanian Government funding has been committed towards upgrades along the West and East Tamar Highways.

East Tamar Highway Corridor Strategy - Launceston to Bell Bay

The East Tamar Highway Corridor Strategy covers the length of the highway from Launceston to Bell Bay, as well as Bell Bay Main Road.

The strategy includes a finalised list of opportunities to improve safety and efficiency and address key challenges highlighted by the community.

These include road-widening, intersection improvements, extra overtaking lanes, and improved active transport connections.

Based on the findings of the corridor strategy, an initial package of work has been developed for design and delivery, with more information to be made available later this year.

West Tamar Highway Corridor Strategy - Launceston to Beauty Point

The West Tamar Highway Corridor Strategy covers the whole length of the highway from Launceston to Beauty Point, building on a previous study that looked at the southern section of the highway between Launceston and Legana.

This new comprehensive plan provides an assessment of the highway and its ability to meet the current and expected needs of the region, including a list of improvement opportunities.

The Department of State Growth is working on designs for the first group of projects, including improved pedestrian crossings in Exeter and intersection upgrades through Riverside, and Frankford Road.
