The Working Groups from Environment and Climate Sustainability, Infrastructure, and Energy Transitions will meet from September 30th to October 4th in different cities in Brasil. Topics such as preventive and emergency adaptation to extreme weather events, financing and mobilizing resources, and innovative projects for using clean and renewable energy sources are on the agenda.
The first week of October will be busy for the G20 Brasil, with three Working Groups meeting in different Brazilian cities. The Infrastructure Working Group will begin its meeting on Monday (30th), and the Climate and Environmental Sustainability Working Group will start its meeting on Tuesday (1st), both in Rio de Janeiro. The Energy Transitions Working Group will remain in Foz do Iguaçu (PR) between Monday, 30th, and Friday, 4th, to hold the technical and ministerial meetings.
The Environment and Climate Sustainability Working Group will also hold a technical and ministerial meeting to discuss preventive and emergency adaptation to extreme weather events, payments for ecosystem services, oceans, waste, and circular economy.
In alignment with the Sustainability Working Group, the Infrastructure Working Group discusses the resilience of infrastructure to climate change and its role in poverty mitigation. Reducing risks in financing and mobilizing resources for cross-border projects are also topics on the agendas.
Concerning the Energy Transitions Working Group, the city of Foz do Iguaçu was chosen to host the meeting because it houses one of the country's most renewable and innovative projects: Itaipu Binacional. With 20 generating units and 14,000 MW of installed capacity in 2023. In 2023, Itaipu was responsible for approximately 10% of Brasil's electricity supply and 88% of Paraguay's. Foz do Iguaçu also represents energy integration in countries, which the Working Group also addresses.
