Brasil supports the priority established by the G20 Joint Force Task for Finance and Health to improve the assessment of global health and social and economic vulnerability that result from pandemics. This action is key for the elaboration and prioritization of agile and efficient political responses for the financial resilience of countries and populations in the face of serious unforeseen events in the healthcare sector.

This stance was presented by Ambassador Tatiana Rosito, secretary of International Affairs of the Brazilian Ministry of Finance (MF) and coordinator of the G20 Finance Track, in a statement she delivered this Thursday (18) during the side event "Simulation Exercise for Economic Resilience to Pandemics", part of the IMF Spring Meetings taking place in Washington, D.C., in the United States. Also at the meeting was Thedros Adhanom, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO).

[...] only through thorough joint preparation can the world be adequately equipped to anticipate and confront unforeseen events, as seen with the COVID-19 pandemic. This preparation necessitates actions involving risk assessment and management, stress testing, and simulation exercises.

The Ambassador highlighted that the discussions have only been able to advance due to the engagement of the WHO and the support of the governments of Indonesia, Italy, Japan, and the United States, among other agents. She reinforced the relevance of a wide debate at a global scale to discuss means to improve economic resilience to pandemics and assess the preparation and mitigation strategies to address the impact of future sanitary emergencies, including the issue of pandemics. "This requires international political cooperation and continuous proactive efforts to keep countries engaged in the discussions at the root of the preparation in the given context," she pointed out.

According to Tatiana Rosito, the crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic highlighted the need for a reassessment of global paradigms regarding joint resilience capacity, aimed at preserving the finances of nations and their populations. The MF secretary underscored that only through thorough joint preparation can the world be adequately equipped to anticipate and confront unforeseen events, as seen with the COVID-19 pandemic. This preparation necessitates actions involving risk assessment and management, stress testing, and simulation exercises.

The joint collaboration between countries is deemed indispensable, with a focused approach on preparing healthcare infrastructures, social safety nets, and fostering research and development for vaccine distribution networks. "Pandemics have no borders," cautioned the Ambassador.

"With an adequate level of coordination and sharing of knowledge, data, and best practices, we can widen the efficiency of our response efforts to minimize economic adversities", said Rosito. She also stressed the relevance of the discussions going on at the G20, which help build a strategic approach to support the global health architecture, under a collaborative spirit.
