The founding documents of the Brazilian presidency's proposal were finalized during the 3rd meeting of the Task Force. They will be presented to social ministers from all G20 member countries at a meeting scheduled for July in Rio de Janeiro. Financing details are to be aligned with technicians and ministers from the Finance Track
"We leave here with the certainty that the world will have a Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty as of November, towards the end of Brasil's presidency of the G20". With these words, Minister Wellington Dias (Development and Social Assistance, Family and Fight against Hunger), closed the meeting of the Task Force to Fight Hunger and Poverty this Friday (24) in Teresina, the capital of the Brazilian state of Piauí.
The statement results from the convergence on the terms of reference, governance frameworks, and commitment statements by the countries to create the Alliance. About 50 delegation members present at the meeting participated in its finalization. According to Minister Dias, there was consensus around the final terms of two seminal documents. A financial screening will be carried out by technicians and authorities from the Finance Track, ensuring that adaptations are made to suit each country's rules and legislation.
South African Nosipho Nausca, Permanent Representative to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), reiterated the desire of the delegations to achieve consensus on the Global Alliance.
"We hope to continue the legacy of the Brazilian presidency, which is serving as an experience; the two countries have a long-standing relationship. The challenges before the Alliance are very specific. Brasil has accurately conceptualized the issue of hunger and poverty in the world, and we coming out of the meeting with a good program to combat the problem," declared Nausca.
She added that "South Africa is being inspired by the role Brasil is playing and hopes not to drop the ball". The country will succeed Brasil as president of the G20 as of December 1 this year.
The work begins: countries can now submit programs with proven results
An online digital platform is now available so that countries wishing to join the Alliance can submit successful programs and experiences for consideration. Concrete proposals are already being drawn up with the expectation of being implemented as soon as the Alliance is officially launched in November during the G20 Heads of State Summit.
The goal is that developed, developing and poorer countries work together to eradicate hunger and poverty. The wealthy and developing countries are welcome to support the initiative by facilitating access to resources, low-interest loans, debt negotiation, technology transfer, and technical training, among others.
The governor of the state of Piauí, Rafael Fonteles, participated in the final press conference. He underscored the prevailing constructive atmosphere throughout the meeting, which began on the 22nd. "I would like to stress the importance of bringing social issues into the G20 discussions, a forum that has historically been more concerned with geopolitical and financial issues," he declared.
