Georges River Council has proudly commissioned a Pride Mural to be painted at Clive James Library & Service Centre, Kogarah, as part of Pride Month.
The work will be painted live by Candela Alconada (she/her) during the month of June, with the mural set to represent and celebrate the diverse LGBTQIA+ community and contribute to making the library a welcoming and inclusive space for everyone.
Candela Alconada's vibrant murals combine professional artistry with a strong social message. Candela's work focuses on representation, joy, and community connection.
Drawing inspirations from the themes of pride, joy, and unity, Candela's mural aims to transform the space into a vibrant celebration of the LGBTQIA+ community. The design features five diverse characters engaging with books and one another—sharing stories, care, and connection in everyday, relatable moments. Subtle visual cues, such as clothing colours representing Pride flags, and a range of body types and expressions highlight the diversity within the community. Candela's signature purple creatures also appear as whimsical guides and symbols of emotional support, adding a playful and welcoming touch to the mural.
Georges River Council Mayor Elise Borg said, "This mural reflects our commitment to the values of our Social Justice Charter, which guides us in creating a community where everyone feels safe, seen, and supported.
"We are honoured to support such a talented artist, celebrate LGBTQIA+ stories and identities, and are dedicated to building a more connected, compassionate and inclusive Georges River."
The mural will be located alongside the Pride Collection, which provides books and resources that feature LGBTQIA+ stories and authors. The community will be able to visit Clive James Library in Kogarah to watch the artwork being painted.
